So my question is - does anyone remember what software played DVDs on Windows 98? I figure I can probably track down a copy of that software on eBay or my usual flea market junk piles. Problem is, I have no idea what kind of software ran DVDs on Windows 98, and their documents aren't helpful either. I installed Interactual on my VM and the browser side of things worked, but when I tried to run the DVD through it, it complained about needing software or hardware to play the DVD.

One I'm working on is Scary Movie, which let you play back the movie in the browser while also playing a trivia game. I just reformatted fresh with Win2k Pro yesterday, and would love to get the DVD player working. It ships with a set of Active-X Controls ( kind of Java applets using Microsoft technology) and Scripts with the purpose of adding nice visual effects and most importantly. PC-Friendly is basically only an DVD-specific GUI ( Graphical User Interface) to Internet Explorer 4.0+ and your DVD-Player. I'm not a huge movie watcher, so I didn't realize the issue of the DVD decoder until a month ago, when my laptop needed immediate repair. Its installation requires approximately 7 Megs. When I got it, I reformatted with Win2k Pro. The second solution works better, but is trickier to set up. When I recieved this laptop I purchased it from my fathers company, which had stripped WinXp off of it and replaced it with Win2k Server edition to demo LanDesk. There are two solutions I looked at - one was to stop the ProxyHost service (or PCAnywhere) before launching the DVD software, and the other was to create a batch file to disable it, launch the DVD player, then restart it the service when it was closed.
